Two Thirds of Brits Would Rather Brag About a Bargain Than an Expensive Purchase

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

Research from a money saving website in the UK has revealed that 67% of Britons are more likely to brag about snapping up a bargain than they would be about buying a big name brand item or expensive product. Furthermore, 49% of respondents said that they were more likely to search for a bargain now than they were one year ago; suggesting that financial circumstances have changed somewhat for people.

The study, commissioned by www.Offeroftheday.co.uk, polled 1,246 UK adults as part of ongoing research into consumer shopping behaviour and spending habits.

Respondents were initially asked ‘Do you regularly look around for the best deals when shopping?’ to which 61% said that ‘yes’ they did look for the best offers. 28% said that they ‘bought for convenience not price’ and 11% said that they ‘weren’t concerned about getting the best deal.’

When respondents were asked ‘Are you more likely to brag about getting a bargain or purchasing an expensive product or big name brand item?’ 67% of those taking part said they’d be more likely to boast about a good deal. Just 11% said they’d be more likely to brag about an expensive purchase, whilst the remaining 22% claimed they’d brag about both bargains and expensive items in equal measures.

The poll asked respondents how they tended to feel when they’d managed to find a bargain, to which the most common response was ‘extreme happiness’ with 49% of the vote. However, when asked how they tended to feel when they’d bought something expensive, the most common answer, with 57% of the vote, was ‘extreme guilt’.

The survey then looked at whether people’s approach to shopping had changed during the last year, asking ‘Are you more likely to search for offers and bargains now than you were one year ago?’ 49% admitted they were more likely to search for deals now than they were one year ago and, when asked why this was the case, 69% put it down to the ‘state of the economy’. 12% said it was due to the fact their income situation had changed and 8% said they simply appreciated a bargain now more than they did a year ago.

Anyone who said that they were more likely to brag about a bargain than an expensive purchase was asked who they were most likely to share their news with, to which 39% said it’d be a friend and 28% said it would be family members. 21% said they’d be most likely to tell colleagues about their bargains.

Ennis Al-Saiegh, Head of Marketing at Offeroftheday.co.uk, made the following comment:

“Our view of shopping seems to have evolved over the last few years and even in the last 12 months. Whereas before we might have been keen to show off our new expensive purchases, with particular emphasis on designer items, now we’re more eager to brag about our savings it seems.”

He continued:

“Tough financial situations often help us to put certain things in perspective. Maybe wearing a designer jacket doesn’t mean as much anymore when compared to covering the cost of fuel and household bills. A lack of disposable income tends to highlight just how much certain things are worth.”

Jon Voight “Didn’t Know” About Angelina Jolie’s Double Mastectomy

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Top secret is right. Among the millions who discovered Tuesday morning that Angelina Jolie had undergone a preventative double mastectomy was her father, actor Jon Voight. Opening up to the Daily News about his daughter’s bold medical decision, the Oscar-winning actor, 74, admits that he was kept out of the loop during Jolie’s February-through-April process.

PHOTOS: Famous family feuds

“My love and admiration for my daughter can’t be explained in words,” said the Midnight Cowboy star, also father to Jolie’s brother James Haven. “I saw her two days ago with my son Jamie. We all got together for his birthday, with her and Brad [Pitt]. But I didn’t know. It wasn’t obvious at all.”

Continued Voight, who reconciled with his famous daughter in early 2010 after years of estrangement: “I found out [Tuesday] morning. I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she’s handled this. She’s a very extraordinary person, the way she examined it and what she shared.”

Indeed, a source told Us Weekly that Jolie kept the secret very close to her vest: “She discussed it with Brad and a few people in her life but very very few knew.”

Voight divorced Jolie and Haven’s mother Marcheline Bertrand in 1980 after nine years of marriage; Bertrand died in 2007 at age 56 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Bertrand was certainly on Jolie’s mind when doctors revealed she carried a “faulty” BRCA1 gene, making her highly susceptible to breast cancer. (The star wrote that she had an 87 percent breast cancer risk and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.)

“My [younger] children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was,” Jolie wrote.

Hart of Dixie’s Travis Van Winkle Talks About His Role on the Hit…

Saturday, May 4th, 2013

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 04, 2013

Hart of Dixie’s Travis Van Winkle, made an appearance on AfterBuzz TV’s Hart of Dixie aftershow last Tuesday night. In his appearance, Van Winkle talks about his role on the hit CW series and calls Rachel Bilson “difficult.”

Travis on working with Rachel Bilson:
“[Rachel Bilson] is a pain in the ass. She’s difficult. No seriously. I’m joking – she’s amazing. She’s wonderful and she’s a true professional. She comes in and does her work. Very approachable and very easy to talk to; very fun-loving. She’s a good person.”

Travis on the Hart of Dixie cast and coming in during the second season:
“The shows that end up working are the shows that have that – the camaraderie because then you can go through the ups and downs and have the support from one another…I’m very easy-going. They came with open arms, and I walked right in and nuzzled up. It’s been a very easy transition on that show.”

Travis on playing Jonah:
“What I like about this character – there’s a British wit to him. He’s very sharp and he makes fun of Zoe a lot, but that’s his charm. It’s nice to play a character that a little edgy but also has a smile on his face and gentle when he has to be. To me, it’s a very dynamic character, and as I’ve progressed in my career, I’ve played more guys like that.”

Travis on his character, Jonah, having power over Zoe:
“It was a nice turn. It was nice to have the power over Zoe for a change. She just kept messing up and I could just keep sticking it to her. It was nice to also really have more of a dramatic episode…when her and I have that moment where I understand where she is coming from. To me that kind of connection through this little bit of drama can lead to possibly something a little bit deeper than what we have had.”

Travis on Wade and Lemon:
“I think [Wade and Lemon] both, their crazies compliment each other. They have a complimentary crazy that could just work.”

Travis on Zoe saying she loves George Tucker:
“I would have thanked her for being honest, it took courage to come here and do and say that and say thank you. Then I would have yelled at her and sent her on her way, graciously.”

Patton Oswalt Writes About Boston Marathon Bombings in Inspirational Facebook Message

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Well said, Patton Oswalt. The 44-year-old comedian and actor wrote a inspiring message on his Facebook page Monday, April 15 following the tragic bombings during the Boston Marathon that went viral.

PHOTOS: Stars from Boston

“I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, ‘Well, I’ve had it with humanity.’ But I was wrong,” Patton wrote. “I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.”

“But here’s what I DO know,” he continued. “If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out.”

VIDEO: Celebrity bible study

And the Virginia-born actor went on to remind people of all the good in world.

“The vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak,” the Young Adult star wrote. “This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.”

PHOTOS: Celeb heroes

Oswalt concluded, “So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, ‘The good outnumber you, and we always will.’”

The bombings on Monday killed three and injured more than 170 people. Oswalt’s message has been shared on Facebook over 200,000 times.

Small businesses still ‘cautious’ about social media

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Social Media and small businesses

PRLog (Press Release)Apr. 11, 2013 - Up to a fifth of small businesses are still “cautious” about social media and believe the benefits of using it are “overrated” , according to a straw poll conducted by http://www.palamedes.co.uk

Nearly 20 per cent of start-ups and SME respondents believe platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Google+ are not worthwhile in driving sales.

They fear the time required to create and update such platforms will “outweigh any benefits or added value” they might bring.

A survey of 400 British businesses by Palamedes PR also found that brands with an existing social media presence are failing to manage them effectively.

Two-thirds of small businesses admitted they spent less than three hours-a-week doing so. Lack of available manpower and customer demands were largely to blame.

Conversely, almost all of those polled agreed that Linkedin was a “credible and worthwhile” platform for B2B commerce and sales – including those without a Linkedin account.

A spokesman for Palamedes PR, which conducted the straw poll last month, said the figures appear to reflect a “missed the boat mentality” among some small businesses.

“Our survey was far from an in-depth study, but it does appear to suggest that a significant proportion of small businesses do not trust, or do not rate, the reach and power of social media,” he said.

“A large number of recipients were unable to invest time into creating and updating a social media profile because of their company’s size. But others were still very cautious about it and believe it is an overrated method of promotion and engagement.

“Either way, the results of this straw poll clearly show somewhat of a missed the boat mentality; businesses which have failed to introduce social media are loathe to do so now – perhaps because they will believe they will already be so far behind”.
