The invitation is out! Over 1.95 million school pupils are being encouraged to blow the holiday cobwebs away and get interactive with Siemens UK. Just launched, the Siemens Education Portal is designed to inspire encourage, motivate and excite young people to engage with and be curious about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Teachers will find a range of flexible schemes of work that include the challenges facing product designers working in the car manufacturing sector; developing sustainable water supplies in hostile environments; and using wind farms to generate energy for modern cities. Supported by a comprehensive multi-media data bank and 3D gameplay and a growing band of Siemens employee volunteers who will be on hand to support and share their experience and knowledge.

Initially the portal will support the 11 to 14 age group with plans to expand the age range over the next two years to include primary and take the age range up to 16.

Whilst supporting teachers and engaging students, Siemens UK are also committed to ensuring that Parents are aware of the range and scope of employment opportunities the industry has to offer. A poll recently carried out by Siemens UK has found that 70% of parents don’t know enough about what engineering jobs have to offer. Around 30% were unaware of the range and scope of jobs currently available.

Juergen Maier, Siemens Industry Managing Director said “It remains vital that we all play our role in developing talent for the future to replace the ageing workforce in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. The only way to change the perceptions of engineering and manufacturing is to target children as young as nine – and really explain how exciting working in this field is.”

Education Minister Elizabeth Truss said “We want more young people to consider a career in engineering and production – sectors vital to the country’s economic competitiveness. The Siemens Education project will help support the Government’s aim to inspire more young people to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It will help give young people the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to meet the challenges of the future.”

One way to make sure their little bundle of joy speaks the language? By enforcing a rule of no English in the home, a plan that Thomas Baldwin says could be hindered by her husband’s lack of Spanish skills.

“It’s a little tricky because my husband doesn’t speak Spanish, so that’ll be a little tricky in the house,” she said. “But maybe we will have our own conversation and he’ll have to learn. We can talk behind his back. I cannot wait!”

The 30 Rock actor is already mentally preparing for second-time parenthood in other ways, however (Baldwin, 54, is already dad to daughter Ireland, 17, with ex-wife Kim Basinger).

“We talk a lot and Alec said this morning,’Think about kindergarten and what they’re going to draw for you,’” Thomas Baldwin told Us, though she admitted that she was personally most excited about “feeding them and that little bath.”

Baldwin may also have to brace for even more estrogen in the household — the couple already have two female dogs at home.

“I turned to Alec yesterday when the ultrasound was done and was like, ‘I get to buy pink things now!’” she said. “We have two girl dogs and me and now we have the baby girl, so he’s just going to be surrounded by girls. And he has his daughter Ireland as well.”

“She’s got a very cute little nose, she’s got very long legs,” Thomas Baldwin continued about seeing the baby’s ultrasound. “She gets the long legs from Alec’s side. We’re so excited!”
