First Mobile Phone Call Placed 40 Years Ago, Cheap Calls Provider Firstnumber Comments

Friday, April 26th, 2013

On April 3, 1973, Marty Copper made the very first mobile phone call, through what was then known as a cellular telephone. Marking it’s 40th anniversary this month.

Marty, who at the time was an employee for Motorola, made the call using a Motorola DynaTAC. This was considered a prototype that went on to become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. The first ever commercially available mobile phone, that was made available to the public in 1983.

Cheap international calls provider Firstnumber, are truly stunned by the recent advancements in mobile technology, considering the Motorola DynaTAC prototype was around 23cm tall and was more than one kilogram in weight, with only thirty five minute talk time after a ten hour charge, featuring only a ‘single-line, text only LED screen’.

No-one at the time were able to predict the recent advancements in mobile technology and how important the internet would be to help shape the incredibly capable smartphones we have today.

A spokesperson from Firstnumber commented on the recent anniversary:

“Considering that recent research has predicted that there will be around 900 million smartphones sold throughout 2013, not including basic feature phones. Along with there being an estimated 5 billion mobile phone owners in the world today. Mobile phones have become part of almost everyone’s life in one way or another, spanning the entire globe.

“As a company who provides low cost international calls, we believe the biggest advantage of mass mobile phone access is the instant connectivity to family and friends – no matter where they are in the world. The cost to call internationally has reduced dramatically over the years and it is now possible to call anyone, without the previous restrains of being limited to a landline.”

To help put this into perspective – mobile phone texting, otherwise known as Short Message Service (SMS), was not introduced until 1992. An interesting piece of information that may go unnoticed by the younger generations. Today, text messaging is considered one of the staple components of a mobile device.

North Korea reportedly warns Japan it would target Tokyo first

Friday, April 12th, 2013
  • April 12, 2013: Japanese Self Defense Forces personnel refuel a PAC-3 missile interceptor, deployed at the compound of Japan’s Defense Ministry amid a tense situation over a possible missile launch by North Korea in Tokyo.AP

North Korea reportedly warned Japan that Tokyo would be the first target if Pyongyang decides to play its nuclear card.

The warning reportedly is in response to Tokyo’s standing orders to destroy any missile heading toward Japan, according to Korean Central News Agency. Japan has deployed PAC-3 missile interceptor units around Tokyo to protect its capital and is taking North Korea’s rhetoric seriously.

“We are doing all we can to protect the safety of our nation,” chief Cabinet spokesman Yoshihide Suga said, though he and Ministry of Defense officials refused to confirm the reports about the naval alert, saying they do not want to “show their cards” to North Korea.

Japanese officials long have feared that North Korea not only has the means but several potential motives for launching an attack on Tokyo or major U.S. military installations on Japan’s main island.

“If Kim Jong Un decides to launch a missile, whether it’s across the Sea of Japan or some other direction, he will be choosing willfully to ignore the entire international community,” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in South Korea. “And it will be a provocation and unwanted act that will raise people’s temperatures.”

“We will stand with South Korea and Japan against these threats. And we will defend ourselves,” he said.

Kerry also weighed in on an intelligence report that rocked Washington on Thursday and suggested that North Korea now had the knowhow to arm a ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead — even if the weapons would lack reliability. Citing the Pentagon’s assessment, Kerry rejected the finding and said that Pyongyang still hadn’t developed or fully tested the nuclear capacities needed for such a step.

Speaking beside Kerry, South Korea Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se called for more United Nations action against Pyongyang if it commits another provocation.

He refused to comment specifically on the U.S. intelligence report, saying only that the North has “high nuclear and missile capabilities” but that it is still some time away from a nuclear bomb that is “small, light and diversified.”

Kerry offered strong words of solidarity for South Korea, and praised South Korea President Park Geun-hye’s “bright vision” of a prosperous and reunified Korean Peninsula without nuclear weapons. By contrast, he said North Korea’s Kim,  has a choice to make between provocation and returning to talks to de-escalate tension and lead to the end of its nuclear program

Both Yun and Kerry kept the door open for future negotiations with Pyongyang.

But both seemed to suggest that they were unlikely in light of the North’s increasingly bombastic threats, including nuclear strikes on the United States. Most experts say those are unfeasible based on the North’s current capacity and would never be explored seriously because the U.S. response would be overwhelming against a regime focused primarily on survival.

Kerry said any talks with North Korea have to lead toward denuclearization.

They have to be really serious,” Kerry said. “No one is going to talk for the sake of talking and no one is going to play this round-robin game that gets repeated every few years, which is both unnecessary and dangerous.”

The first ever Redhead Day UK to be hosted by The Printworks

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Redhead Day UK is an opportunity for redheads across the world to meet in Manchester on the 29th of June 2013. The all-day event hosted at The Printworks, Manchester, is being organised by Everything for Redheads, with the aim of giving a sense of community to Redheads everywhere with organised activities they can participate in.

“Other countries around the world have Redhead events, but there is no established event in the UK. Considering the high proportion of Redheads here, relative to other countries, this is a real shame.” Says the co-founder of Everything for Redheads, Jessica Shailes “Redheads have very few opportunities to feel a sense of community, apart from on the Internet, so we’re seeking to change that.”
Redhead Day UK will include appearances from red haired entertainers, special offers from local businesses, photo opportunities and product/service demonstrations suitable for redheads. The range of entertainment and activities is likely to increase coming up to the day and there are plenty of opportunities to help shape the day.

Redhead Day will be held at Waxy O’Connors in The Printworks, an entertainment complex central to Manchester with easy access to national and international transport links. The Printworks, all undercover, is home to a variety of other bars, restaurants, clubs, a gym and Odeon cinema so there is plenty to do between Redhead related activities no matter what the weather. Support by the Printworks has made Redhead Day UK possible and the collaboration is an exciting one.

A natural redhead herself event organiser Jessica Shailes explains “You don’t have to be a redhead to come along; the day is about celebrating everything it means to be a redhead, so if you support redheads you’re more than welcome to share our Ginger Love. It is sure to be fun for everybody there and a rare opportunity to see so many shades of red in one place.”

Fred Booth Centre Director for The Printworks said
“As a key venue in the heart of Manchester we often play host to brand new festivals and events to help them to get off the ground. We have acted as a venue for a wide range of festivals that are now well established in the Manchester scene such as the 24:7 Theatre Festival, Manchester’s Irish Festival and most recently the Greater Manchester Film Festival. Hopefully Redhead day will be in the annual event calendar for years to come.”

Yorkshire’s Champion Chippie In Sustainable Fish First

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Whitby’s Quayside only fish and chip shop in the county to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council

Whitby’s Quayside, champion chippie of the Northeast, has become the first fish and chip shop in Yorkshire to get the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) stamp of approval that the fish it serves is sustainably sourced. Only 12 fish and chip shops in the UK have MSC certification along with a handful of restaurants including Raymond Blanc’s Michelin-starred Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons.

Stuart Fusco, chef and director at Quayside, said: “We can tell our customers exactly where their juicy crispy golden haddock and hake came from, from the name of the boat down to the area where it was caught and on what date. Serving sustainably sourced fish is important as fish supplies have to be responsibly managed if we are to enjoy fish and chips for years to come.”

To be certified Quayside had to be independently audited and demonstrate commitment to the MSC’s Chain of Custody programme that can trace each fish from sea to plate via fishermen, wholesalers, retailers and restaurant owners – all of whom must be MSC certified. From next week, customers to Quayside will see the MSC’s distinctive blue ecolabel against haddock and hake on its new spring menus.

Quayside has been dedicated to using only responsibly sourced ingredients since it opened in 1999. It serves only sustainably sourced cod from fisherman certified by the Iceland Responsible Fisheries scheme, UK potatoes and locally sourced pies, vegetables and desserts.

Stuart said: “We have been serving only sustainably sourced fish for many years but it is good to have MSC certification to reassure our customers that they are making the right choice for the environment when they come to Quayside. That’ll make our fish and chips taste even better.”

MSC is a global non-profit organisation that’s dedicated to recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing and allowing customers to choose fish that’s sustainably sourced to protect the health of our oceans. It is recognized as having one of the best seafood traceability certification programs in the world. As a result, the MSC ecolabel is one of the most trusted indicators of seafood sustainability and can be found on over 11,000 products around the world.

Since opening in 1999, Quayside has been a consistent award-winner both nationally and locally for its products, its people and its community spirit. This year it was named Best Fish and Chip Shop in the Northeast for the second consecutive year at the National Fish and Chip Shop Awards and its 80-seat restaurant was judged Best Fish and Chip Restaurant North of London.

Notes to editors:

Marine Stewardship Council Certification includes:
• Buying MSC certified seafood only from suppliers with a valid Chain of Custody certificate
• Keeping MSC certified seafood separate from non-certified seafood
• Making sure MSC certified seafood is clearly identified
• Keeping track of deliveries, processing and sales of MSC certified seafood
• Ensuring the MSC ecolabel is only applied to MSC certified seafood
