First Mobile Phone Call Placed 40 Years Ago, Cheap Calls Provider Firstnumber Comments

Friday, April 26th, 2013

On April 3, 1973, Marty Copper made the very first mobile phone call, through what was then known as a cellular telephone. Marking it’s 40th anniversary this month.

Marty, who at the time was an employee for Motorola, made the call using a Motorola DynaTAC. This was considered a prototype that went on to become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. The first ever commercially available mobile phone, that was made available to the public in 1983.

Cheap international calls provider Firstnumber, are truly stunned by the recent advancements in mobile technology, considering the Motorola DynaTAC prototype was around 23cm tall and was more than one kilogram in weight, with only thirty five minute talk time after a ten hour charge, featuring only a ‘single-line, text only LED screen’.

No-one at the time were able to predict the recent advancements in mobile technology and how important the internet would be to help shape the incredibly capable smartphones we have today.

A spokesperson from Firstnumber commented on the recent anniversary:

“Considering that recent research has predicted that there will be around 900 million smartphones sold throughout 2013, not including basic feature phones. Along with there being an estimated 5 billion mobile phone owners in the world today. Mobile phones have become part of almost everyone’s life in one way or another, spanning the entire globe.

“As a company who provides low cost international calls, we believe the biggest advantage of mass mobile phone access is the instant connectivity to family and friends – no matter where they are in the world. The cost to call internationally has reduced dramatically over the years and it is now possible to call anyone, without the previous restrains of being limited to a landline.”

To help put this into perspective – mobile phone texting, otherwise known as Short Message Service (SMS), was not introduced until 1992. An interesting piece of information that may go unnoticed by the younger generations. Today, text messaging is considered one of the staple components of a mobile device.

Mobile operators to tackle race for spectrum at London TMT M&A event

Friday, March 8th, 2013

The universal rollout of 4G services and a shift towards the data driven consumer is putting increasing pressure on mobile operators to develop new spectrum acquisition strategies.

Operators now require portfolios of low frequency spectrum to provide high quality coverage and high frequency spectrum to support the highest-data rates and provide high levels of capacity in the most populated areas.

“Spectrum portfolios are market-defining – if you haven’t got the right spectrum – or not enough of it – you are going to find it difficult to be a successful market player,” said Jan Willem van den Bos, Partner, SNR Denton, who will be chairing the Race for Spectrum panel at the TMT M&A Forum 2013 in London on March 14 at the Millennium Hotel Mayfair.

“The good news is that the spectrum market is far more dynamic than it used to be – if you haven’t got the right spectrum now, chances are you may be able to pick up what you need soon, such as through re-farming initiatives, liberalisation and trading opportunities. You can see why spectrum regulation is key to making sure this market doesn’t fail,” said van den Bos.

The spectrum panel also includes speakers from EE, Hutchison 3, SFR, Standard Chartered, Virgin Media and Alix Partners, who will be assessing new licence auctions and the impact of regulation, including key issues such as what new spectrum is available and necessary; valuing licences and spectrum; how should bundles be packaged and 4G, LTE and Wimax and protecting against new technology shifts.

For the full programme go to http://www.tmtfinance.com/merger/programme

“The recent UK 4G auction resulted in an unexpected disparity in spectrum holdings across the different operators – it will be interesting to see how this impacts mobile market dynamics,” commented spectrum specialist Amit Nagpal, Partner, Aetha Consulting. “For example, could EE increase its market-share in the medium-term through acquiring high-value customers who are attracted by unlimited data plans at price points which other operators could struggle to match?”
TMT M&A Forum 2013, which is produced by TMT Finance, gathers leading telecom tech and media executives, including CEOs, CSOs, CFOs and Heads of M&A, with investment bankers, private equity investors and specialist advisers to assess how transactions will drive change globally.

Pokereve – Faster poker home games using mobile devices

Tuesday, January 1st, 2013

On Dec. 1st the new website www.pokereve.com was launched.

Lucian Depold, Dipl.Inf., offers a new and modern way of playing Texas Hold’em to poker-fans.

The advantages are plain to see:

Pokereve replaces the usual playing cards with mobile devices, i.e. the cards are shown on displays. Thus you don’t have to waste time shuffling and dealing the cards any longer: Pokereve does it for you in an instant using an extremely fast Mersenne-Twister-algorithm – well known for creating high quality sequences of random numbers. Especially when playing Texas Hold’em home games with a small number of players Pokereve will prove being a real benefit. You can play up to 70% more hands than in a usual home game.

Pokereve may be used free of charge by everyone. It is compatible with almost all kinds of mobile devices, including Android, iOS, Symbian, Blackberry OS and Windows tablets and smart phones. Compatibility is ensured as Pokereve runs in the browser of all devices. Therefore, of course, the device must be connected to the internet. Nevertheless Pokereve is akin to a conventional app due to optimized loading time and dynamic rendering that adjusts the card’s size to the available screen size. This browser-based approach was chosen deliberately as to support a wide variety of new and older devices.

Virgin Mobile to Sell No-Contract Galaxy S II Nov. 15

Virgin Mobile to Sell No Contract Galaxy S II Nov. 15

Virgin Mobile customers can get their hands on Samsung’s Galaxy S II smartphone starting next week.

The unlocked, 4G-equipped phone will be available Nov. 15 for $ 369.99, online and at participating retailers.

Virgin Mobile’s expanding 4G lineup now includes the 4.52-inch touch-screen handset, complete with an 800-by-480 Super AMOLED Plus screen and 8-megapixel rear camera.

Running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the Galaxy S II will be available for Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk customers, with plans starting at $ 35 per month for unlimited data and messaging. The dual-mode 3G/4G no-contract device can also be turned into a mobile hotspot.

Less than a year after its April 2011 launch, Samsung’s Galaxy S II reached the 20 million shipment mark in February, which Samsung’s Mobile president, JK Shin, said at the time was a reflection of the phone’s “tremendous popularity with customers around the world.”

Virgin Mobile may have some no-contract competition, since Walmart began selling the same phone in September through T-Mobile’s 4G no annual contract plan, for only $ 299. Virgin Mobile’s silver or white offering will allow customers to purchase the handset without having to sign a long-term contract.

The Sprint-owned wireless company last week announced a new daily plan for its 3G/4G Broadband2Go service, now offering users 24 hours of Internet access, for just $ 5. With up to 200MB of 3G service and unlimited 4G where available, the new plan joins Virgin Mobile’s existing $ 35 and $ 55 monthly plans, for either 2GB or 5GB of 3G service, respectively.

Virgin Mobile celebrated its 10th birthday earlier this year by becoming the second U.S. mobile carrier to offer the Apple iPhone on a pay-as-you-go basis.
